Hurricane Katrina and Rita FEMA Trailers

"Hurricane victims do not deserve to be victimized by their own government."

In 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita left tens of thousands of Gulf Coast residents homeless. In what initially seemed like a noble gesture, the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) paid several U.S. mobile home and travel trailer manufacturers more than .7 billion dollars to produce approximately 120,000 "FEMA trailers" for those displaced by the hurricanes. However, in producing these trailers the manufacturers chose to put their profits over the safety of the people for whom they were building the trailers. The manufacturers produced the FEMA trailers very quickly and with substandard building materials. One of the effects is that the trailers omit a gas known as formaldehyde which make the trailers' occupants sick.

Formaldehyde is a colorless, highly toxic, flammable and explosive gas. Formaldehyde is commonly found in glues and adhesives used in pressed wood products such as particle board, plywood, fiberboard, subfloors, and cabinetry. The symptoms associated with exposure to high levels of formaldehyde include irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, headache, runny or bloody nose, difficulty breathing, nausea, skin disorders including rashes, difficulty sleeping, and asthma-like symptoms. In June 2004 the IARC also reclassified formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen.

Our firm is currently representing clients who have lived, or continue to live, in FEMA trailers and may have been the victims of formaldehyde exposure. We are pursing claims against the manufactures of these FEMA trailers who put profits ahead of the health of our clients. If you, your loved ones, or friends have lived, or continue to live, in FEMA trailers, you may qualify for a portion of any class action settlement.
